I was very nervous about volunteering on my first day because it had been a while since I volunteered and the fact that I was working with hurt or elderly people got me more nervous but my first day actually turned out easier than I thought it would be. All I did was train, so I saw what had to be done and how to do it. My expectations were very high. especially because my aunt works there and how she described the job would be was pretty intense. A challenge I faced while volunteering was having a woman who was paralyzed from her left side and had memory loss call me a unnecessary name. I learned that there are going to be times that you don't know how or when someone will react with something but you have to maintain proper and do what you can to fix the problem . Heritage Care Park Center is a nursing home in Carbondale Co. I definitely would consider working in a non-profit organization as a future career but I would do it on the side. I would to this because . Civic Responsibility to me means helping something or someone out in a civil way. its a responsibility we have to do weather we get paid or not. Something that made me proud while providing service was meeting the family of the patient I helped out with. It made me proud because she liked me enough to let me meet her family and talked good about me. If I was a supervisor I would tell the volunteers that they cant choose who they want to work with or what section they wan to work on. because I went in thinking I could when I couldn't. Talking about my life with the patients I think helped me out by letting them know that I actually do care to get to know them. that I was taking my volunteering serious. I think the best thing that happened to me at Heritage was being able to paint a woman's nails and do her make up. It was the best because she didn't let anyone do anything to her but she liked my work witch made me feel good making her feel good. it was a win win. I do plan of volunteering again in the future but with kids this time. I've worked with kids before at a pre-school and enjoyed it so I would love to do it again!
